Charlie Chaplin.....

Have you ever watched a Charlie Chaplin movie?
I watched Modern Times today....
its a really beautiful movie.
almost like watching a ballet,
everything is so perfectly choreographed.

And how did silent movie star express themselves
with out words, a bit through facial expression,
its much more through movement and body language
and timing with music.

Charlie Chaplin is an amazing and nimble dancer
if you ask me....

Movie Favourites.....

I love a movie, especially a chick flick,
that i can watch again and again and always enjoy.

Like, 'Forces of Nature'
with Sandra Bullock and Ben Affleck

It's about a straight laced guy trying to get to his wedding when all the odds are against him,
everything that can go wrong does....
and on the way he meets the care-free Sandra Bullock who ends up travelling with him.

I know its not a serious style movie,
but it makes me smile and laugh the whole way through
and the last 5 minutes never fails to give me goosebumps...
and tears...lots of tears.

I've been watching lots of wedding-themed movies lately....
for 'research'...

let me just say this,
there is barely a wedding themed movie that doesnt have
a bride/groom being abandoned at the alter....

please dont tell me that that is a
common feature in real weddings....

Movie movie....

I've been dying to see the movie Ondine for a long time.
I have a thing about Selkies and their aren't a lot of movies about them,
so i was excited when i heard about this one.

It didnt disappoint,
a beautiful blend of reality,
fairytales,
and escapism.

Recommended.

because getting to work is a bit dangerous again.

But instead i'm just going to post this.

Ooooooh, I can't wait!

Movie under the Moon....

I came home from work last night to find that my roommate
had borrowed a projector and set up a mini-cinema on our balcony.

It was lovely to sit out side under the moon
(i would say stars but in Cairo its pretty hard to see them)
and eat cold pizza
(it had been warm but by the time i got there it was cold)

and the movie we watched....

O Brother Where Art Thou,

its a corker!

Over the Rainbow.....

I've been on holiday in Turkey,
(sorry, lots of holiday photos will soon be coming....
whether you like it or not)

But i've also recently been reading a biography
of Judy Garland by David Shipman.

Its a sad story,
of a life of a woman who never felt good enough
and couldnt deal with the reality of herself
and the image she was supposed to portray in films.

She spent a life addicted to drugs
and full of insecurities mainly forced upon her
from the picture studio she was working for.

In fact reading it i see many similarities between
the biography of Marilyn Monroe who suffered
from nearly the exact same problems.....
and in fact today there are still movie and pop stars
who suffer and die from the same insecurities.

At any rate i wanted to share this video.

This is Judy in 1955,
the studios had stopped employing her for movies
because she was so erratic and she turned to stage shows,
and although she suffered from stage fright,
the instant gratification from the public pulled her through.

She is dressed in her tramp outfit from the previous song,
but for me this is Raw Judy,
not the Judy who i know from movies,
'the girl next door' who she never really was.....

The wise words of Kevin Costner....

I have a little notebook that i occassionally write down quotes in.
I like to write them down on random pages
and yesterday i came across this one that i'd forgotten about,
a quote from the lovely Kevin Costner,

"Real heroes are men who fall and fail and are flawed,
but win out in the end because
they stayed true to their ideals and beliefs."

and this comes from a guy who has played Robin Hood,
so he must be in the know.

And now, just whilst Kevin Costner is on my mind,
i'm going to put it out their and say how much i love pretty
much all his movies that i've seen,
especially
The Postman,
which was such a box office failure.

i think i love it more because of that.
hmmmmm........
i'm thinking right now i might
watch me a bit of Waterworld....

My Litttle Ponies....

As a kid i was a huge My Little Pony fan.

In fact in a cupboard back home are my
Dream Castle and Nursery, with about 50 My Little Ponies
that i've never quite got round to throwing away.

I like to use the excuse that one day i'll have children
and i'll be saving money as i'll never have to actually buy them toys
or stuffed animals as i have copious amounts in storage to be
whipped out at each birthday for many a year to come....

Anyhows,
Today i came across a youtube sight which has
some My Little Pony film 'remakes' on it.

I love them!
I think they would make
some kick-ass movies dont you?

Movie, Movie....

I havent been to the movies much recently.
The last one i saw here in the cinema was The Adjustment Bureau,
which i liked, after i got used to the fact that they were playing
was a really badly fake version of the movie.
Oh yes,
microphones, camera men and film-hands just walking about in the
background made it a little hard to be able to suspend your disbelief.....
but also got a good chuckle from us.
Oh Egypt!

Oh wait,
i just remembered the last movie i actually saw was Thor.
I guess i've been trying to supress the memory of it seeing as it made
me want to gauge my eyeballs out.

At anyrate,
I is well looking forward to this movie.....

Oh, and Cowboys and Aliens.....
cause what can go wrong with a movie about aliens and cowboys
when it has Harrison Ford in it.

Movies without words....

I once accidently watched a dvd with the 'soundtrack only'
version that was a special feature.
It took me until half way through the movie to realise this.
I was thinking,
'wow, this movie is so innovative,
look how they can express themselves with just the soundtrack'
(don't think i'm really really stupid, but it was the biography of some cellist,
so the music did heavily feature in it.)
but it was really really beautiful.
(i dont remember the name of the movie, Hilary and.......?)

Maybe its the dancer in me,
we spend so long trying to express ourselves to music without our words,
But i think its why Wallee is one of my favourite Disney cartoons too.

Anyhows,
i bring this up because i just watched the movie ,The Illusionist.
And this one actually is a movie without words...a cartoon actually.
About a failing magician who meets a girl who truly believes that he can do magic.

And it's beautiful,
And its set in Edinburgh,
Which only makes it even more beautiful.

crying.....

Yesterday i was tired up to the point of exhaustion.

My legs were wobbling like jelly trying to keep my body standing upright.

'Again!'
she shouted at me in Russian,
a language i can barely comprehend and cannot speak.

It was just the beginning of the day,
and my legs got tired-er and tired-er
and i wanted to tell her i couldnt go on,
but didnt.

And things just got worse from there on in as i tried to push through
the barrier of exhaustion.

And i cried.
And it felt good.

And it reminded of a quote from one of my favourite movies,

"but what do you do?
You laugh.
I'm not saying i don't cry,
but inbetween, i laugh.
I realise how silly it is to take everything too seriously.
Plus, I look forward to a good cry - it feels good"

The Garden State

so today i'm trying to laugh.

The Land Before Time....

Last night i felt like watching
The Land Before TIme.
So i did.

It's a movie that i watched many a time when i was a wee bit wee-er,
I think it's been a long time since i last watched it as, i dont every remember really appreciate quite how beautiful a movie it is.

i'll admit i got emotional on the odd occasion
and the soundtrack had me dreaming up a dinosaur ballet.

i've decided that, one day, its definitely going to be a movie
that my children are going to be made to appreciate.

Yep, yep yep!

Inconceivable!

I just got finished watching The Princess Bride.
I love that movie,
I remember the first time i watched it i was 10
and my sister had come back from holiday from the states
where she had brought it back as a present,
as apparently my cousins watched it all the time.

And we were hooked....

well with things such as,

The Dread Pirate Roberts
The Cliffs of Insanity
The 6 Fingered Man
Giants
The Fire Swamp
and
most of all
True Love.....

how can you go wrong?

New Adventures....

So heading off to Egypt on Saturday morning...
Feeling scared,
not knowing what to expect
but at the same time looking forward to new adventures.
I have of course been doing plenty of research,
namely watching The Mummy Trilogy
and James Bond movie which is set in Cairo.
Yip...
whether its going to be chasing after mummies
or just trying to find an apartment...
Advenutres.

Twitterpated....

I spent Sunday afternoon watching Disney movies with my sisters.

This little clip from Bambi talks about being 'twitterpated'
and i thought to myself....
boy oh boy
do i know that feeling.

How right is Mister Owl.

And dont forget it can happen to any one of you!

A Fantastic, Fantastic Mister Fox....

Why have i only just got round to seeing the movie Fantastic Mister Fox?
Is it because i've been busy filling my last couple of week here in Ljubljana doing things i'd always thought i'd get round to doing but never did and a few other bonuses that just popped up..

like,
going white water rafting...
having multiple bbq's...
sailing around the coast in fancy boats...
swimming in the ocean...
going to outdoor movies...
sneaking into the fanciest hotel in the country
and using there swimming pool and eating a free buffet....
swimming in a fresh water lake between the mountains...

and generally just catching up with friends...

at any rate,
I loved this movie...
LOVED!

The Monty Python Motto....

Today was one of those days
where all the worries
that normally lie dormant
right down at the bottom of my toes
came bubbling up and over the brim
like a can of coke that has been all-shooked-up.

Sometimes i feel like wherever i turn
there are brick walls that i just dont know how to climb

But then i remember the Monty Python
Who remind me to
'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life'
